The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker is a dense read, with new characters and plot lines introduced even 3/4 of the way through the book. Keeping up with every detail, every motivation, every twist was a bit laborious, but the book is saved by Wecker’s clear, insightful writing, and the powerful charisma of the Golem and the Jinni themselves.
Laura Amy Schlitz’s new book Splendors and Glooms is eerily -and appropriately – titled. While I found it wonderful and mesmerizing, I also found it a little disturbing, and even stopped reading for a while to let my nerves settle and to decide if I would ultimately finish the book (I did – and I’m so glad!).
My thoughts about The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern are complicated. I wanted to love this book, I really did. But…I didn’t love it. And yet, I would still recommend it. Complicated, indeed.
I just finished Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants, and I feel like shouting “I LOVED THIS BOOK!” It’s one of those times when I wish I could talk to another enthusiastic reader of the book right away.

The difficulty in writing this review will be trying to avoid hyperbole. How can you gush and go on about a book without sounding insincere (or a little bit goofy?) Oh, but I loved loved loved this book, hyperbole or not.
