Haunting and heartwarming, airy but earnest, Sarah Addison Allen’s Other Birds felt like a delicious hug of a book. If you’re familiar with magical realism, you’ll understand that you have to give yourself over to the quirks, and you’ll be surprisingly satisfied, though not everything will be explained.
A brief synopsis:
When Zoey comes to claim her deceased mother’s apartment on a tiny South Carolina island, she meets her quirky and secretive neighbors — including a girl on the run, two estranged middle-aged sisters, a lonely chef, a legendary writer, and three ghosts. Each with their own story. Each with their own longings. Each whose ending isn’t yet written.
Sarah Addison Allen is such a master of this genre – you’re in good hands here. Other Birds was a joy to read.
