When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead

book cover for When You Reach Me

For a book with a far-fetched premise, Rebecca Stead’s When You Reach Me has a very real and believable quality about it.

A synopsis:

Miranda is an ordinary sixth grader, until she starts receiving mysterious messages from somebody who knows all about her, including things that have not even happened yet. Each message brings her closer to believing that only she can prevent a tragic death. Until the final note makes her think she’s too late.

I love the relationships between all the characters in When You Reach Me – they are complicated and honest.

This book feels like an overstuffed coat pocket – full of lots of little gems and more meaning than you might first expect. Grab this for a quick, pleasant afternoon read.
